This year certainly hasn’t been an easy one, with some going as far as to compare it to 2008. But the Chief Executive Officers honored on our list have led their institutions through tough decisions and proven that the industry is always progressing and adapting to unexpected changes.

This year’s awardees include Jane Fraser, Citibank’s Chief Executive Officer, and the first female CEO in the firm’s history, who has launched a long-term strategy to adjust the firm for the digital age; Timothy Wennes, President and CEO of Santander Bank, whose focus on innovation and investments that drive customer experience are helping Santander grow globally; and Capital One’s Founder, Chairman, and CEO, Richard Fairbank, whose vision and leadership have positioned the bank as a leading data and technology company that has been recognized as one of the most cloud-forward in the world.

1. Jane Fraser
Chief Executive Officer, Citibank

Jane Fraser is the Chief Executive Officer of Citi, the world's most global bank, which serves millions of consumers, businesses, and institutions across 160 countries and jurisdictions. She is the first female CEO in the firm’s history. Since becoming CEO in March 2021, Fraser has launched a multi-year strategy to increase Citi’s profitability and better position the firm for the speed and complexities of the digital age. This effort includes the transformation of Citi’s risk and control environment by modernizing infrastructure, striving for operational excellence, and investing in Citi’s culture. Fraser is committed to making Citi the preeminent banking partner for institutions with cross-border needs, a global leader in wealth management, and a valued personal bank in its home market of the U.S.

During her 18-year career at Citi, Fraser has held leadership roles across Citi’s consumer and institutional businesses. Before becoming CEO, she was President of Citi and CEO of the Global Consumer Bank, responsible for all of Citi’s consumer businesses in 19 markets. She also spearheaded the firm’s efforts to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, which she carried into her position as CEO.

Fraser serves on the Board of Directors of the Business Roundtable and the Council on Foreign Relations. She is Vice Chair of the Partnership for New York City as well as the Financial Services Forum and a member of the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s International Advisory Panel, Harvard Business School’s Board of Dean’s Advisors, the Stanford Global Advisory Board, the Economic Club of New York, and President Biden’s Export Council. Jane has an MBA from Harvard Business School and an MA in economics from Cambridge University. She is married with two children.

 

2. William Demchak
President and CEO, PNC Bank

William S. Demchak is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of The PNC Financial Services Group, one of the largest diversified financial services companies in the United States.

Demchak joined PNC in 2002 as its CFO. In July 2005, he was named head of PNC's Corporate & Institutional Banking responsible for PNC's middle market and large corporate businesses, as well as capital markets, real estate finance, equity management and leasing. Demchak was promoted to senior vice chairman in 2009 and named head of PNC businesses in August 2010. He was elected president in April 2012, CEO in April 2013 and chairman in April 2014.

Demchak is a member and past chairman of the board of directors of the Bank Policy Institute and is a member of The Business Council. He is a member and past chairman of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development (ACCD) and serves as the chair of the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance, an ACCD affiliate. In addition, he is on the board of directors of the Extra Mile Education Foundation and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

Demchak received an undergraduate degree from Allegheny College and earned an MBA with an emphasis in accounting from the University of Michigan.

 

3. William Rogers
Chairman and CEO, Truist Bank

William H. “Bill” Rogers Jr. is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Truist Financial Corporation, a purpose-driven financial services organization committed to inspiring and building better lives and communities.

Rogers was named Chairman on March 12, 2022, and CEO on in September 12, 2021, after serving as President and Chief Operating Officer of Truist between December 2019 and September 2021. Prior to that, he served as chairman and CEO of a predecessor company since January 2012, after having been appointed CEO in June 2011. Rogers held increasingly senior positions in corporate and commercial banking, corporate finance, retail banking, private wealth management, and mortgage after joining the commercial banking division in 1980.

Rogers is a champion for the company’s philanthropy and volunteerism. He serves on the boards of a number of local and national organizations. He is currently a board member of the Charlotte Center City Partners, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and the Emory University Board of Trustees. Rogers also serves on the advisory board of Operation HOPE Inc. and is a member of the Charlotte Executive Leadership Council.

A native of North Carolina, Rogers earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MBA from Georgia State University.

 

4. David Solomon
Chairman and CEO, Goldman Sachs

David Solomon is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.

Previously, he was President and Chief Operating Officer and prior to that, he served as Co-Head of the Investment Banking Division from 2006 to 2016. Before that, Solomon was Global Head of the Financing Group, which includes all capital markets and derivative products for the firm’s corporate clients. He joined Goldman Sachs as a Partner in 1999.

Solomon is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Hamilton College and serves on the board of The Robin Hood Foundation. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

 

5. Richard Fairbank
Founder, Chairman, and CEO, Capital One

Richard Fairbank is the Founder, CEO and Chairman of Capital One, a Fortune 100 company. He is one of only five founder-CEOs among America’s largest 100 companies. Fairbank has been the CEO since Capital One’s initial public offering in November 1994 and has served as the Chairman since February 1995. After earning his undergraduate degree and MBA. from Stanford University, Fairbank was a strategy consultant and advised leading companies on long-term business strategy and growth opportunities. He came up with the idea for Capital One in 1987, and left his consulting career to build it.

Fairbank’s vision and leadership have positioned Capital One as a leading data and technology company and the company has been recognized as one of the most cloud-forward companies in the world. The company serves more than 100 million customers, has built an iconic and respected brand, and has been recognized by Fortune for being one of the best 100 places to work.

Fairbank has over three decades of experience in banking and financial services. As the founder and CEO of Capital One, he is knowledgeable about all aspects of the company’s strategies, capabilities and culture. His qualifications as a director include his deep understanding of Capital One and his broad range of skills in the areas of strategy, technology, risk management, talent, brand and shareholder engagement.

 

6. Bharat Masrani
Group President and CEO, TD Bank

Bharat Masrani was appointed Group President and Chief Executive Officer of TD Bank Group on November 1, 2014. Masrani has more than 35 years of extensive banking experience and is a member of the TD Bank Group Board of Directors.

Prior to his current role, Masrani served as Chief Operating Officer for TD Bank Group and prior to that as President and CEO of TD Bank. He has held senior executive roles across the bank's global footprint including serving as Chief Risk Officer, TD Bank Group; CEO of TD Waterhouse in Europe; Senior Vice President, Corporate Finance and Co-Head in Europe; Vice President and Country Head for India; and Vice President and Head of Corporate Banking in Canada. Masrani began his career with TD as a Commercial Banking Trainee in 1987.

Masrani earned a bachelor’s degree with honors from York University in 1978 and obtained his MBA from York University’s Schulich School of Business in 1979. For his achievements in business and the community, Masrani was awarded honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from the Schulich School of Business in 2017 and from Mount Allison University in 2018. He currently serves on the boards of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and The Charles Schwab Corporation, The Bank Policy Institute and The Clearing House in the U.S.

 

7. Robin Vince
President and CEO, Bank of New York Mellon

Robin Vince is President and Chief Executive Officer of BNY Mellon and a member of its Board of Directors. Previously, he was Vice Chair of BNY Mellon and CEO of Global Market Infrastructure. In that role, he oversaw BNY Mellon’s Clearance and Collateral Management, Treasury Services, Markets and Execution Services, and Pershing businesses.

Prior to joining BNY Mellon in October 2020, Vince was the Chief Risk Officer of Goldman Sachs and a member of the Management Committee. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1994 and held many leadership roles, including Treasurer, Head of Operations, Head of Global Money Markets, COO of the EMEA region, and CEO of Goldman Sachs International Bank, among others. He served on several key subsidiary boards and governance committees. He was named Managing Director in 2002 and Partner in 2006.

Vince is a member of National Geographic Society's Hubbard Council and serves on the Board of Advisors of The Hospital for Special Surgery.

 

8. Ronald O'Hanley
Chairman and CEO, State Street Bank and Trust Company

Ron O’Hanley is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of State Street, the second-oldest continually operating U.S. bank. O’Hanley was previously President and Chief Operating Officer of State Street, and before that, President and CEOof State Street Global Advisors, the investment management arm of State Street. He joined State Street in 2015.

Prior to State Street, O’Hanley was president of Asset Management & Corporate Services for Fidelity Investments, responsible for Fidelity’s asset management organizations, corporate functions, and enterprise technology. He served at Fidelity from 2010 to 2014.

O’Hanley serves on the boards of Unum Corp., Beth Israel Lahey Health, ABL Space Systems, The Boston Foundation, The Ireland Funds, IYRS School of Technology and Trades, Syracuse University, WBUR, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. He is Chair of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce and the Financial Services Forum.

O’Hanley is involved in investment industry efforts around climate, corporate governance, and diversity and inclusion. He leads the Sustainable Markets Initiative Task Force for Asset Managers and Asset Owners. He also has leadership roles at the International Business Council, Institute for International Finance, Focusing Capital on the Long Term, the Council for Inclusive Capitalism, and the Vatican Summit on the Just Transition with Notre Dame University.

O’Hanley received his BA in political science from Syracuse University in 1980 and his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1986.

 

9. Bruce Van Saun
Chairman and CEO, Citizens Bank

Bruce Van Saun is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Citizens Financial Group, Inc. Van Saun joined CFG in October 2013 – after serving as Group Finance Director and as an executive director on the RBS Board from 2009 to 2013. He led Citizens to a successful initial public offering in September 2014, and full independence from RBS in October 2015. He has more than 30 years of financial services experience.

From 1997 to 2008, Van Saun held a number of senior positions with Bank of New York and later Bank of New York Mellon, including Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer. Earlier in his career, he held senior positions with Deutsche Bank, Wasserstein Perella Group and Kidder Peabody & Co.

Van Saun has served on a number of boards in both the U.S. and the U.K. He is currently a director of Moody’s Corporation, sits on the Federal Advisory Council, and is a member of The Clearing House Supervisory Board. He is also a board member of the National Constitution Center, the Partnership for Rhode Island and Jobs for Massachusetts.

Van Saun earned his MBA from the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School in 1983, and an undergraduate degree in accounting from Bucknell University.

 

10. James Gorman
Chairman and CEO, Morgan Stanley

James Gorman is Chairman and CEO of Morgan Stanley. Gorman became CEO in January 2010 and Chairman in January 2012. He joined the firm in February 2006 and was named Co-President in December 2007. Before joining Morgan Stanley, Gorman held a succession of executive positions at Merrill Lynch. Prior to this, he was a senior partner of McKinsey & Co. and began his career as an attorney in Melbourne, Australia.

Among his civic activities, Gorman serves as a Director of the Council on Foreign Relations, and Chair of the Board of Overseers of the Columbia Business School, and is a member of the Financial Services Forum, Business Council and the Business Roundtable. He formerly served as a Director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, President of the Federal Advisory Council to the U.S. Federal Reserve Board, Co-Chairman of the Partnership for New York City, Chairman of the Board of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association and Co-Chairman of the Business Committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Gorman, who was born in Australia, earned a BA and Law degree from the University of Melbourne and an MBA from Columbia University.

 

11. Timothy Spence
President and CEO, Fifth Third Bank

Tim Spence serves as President and CEO of Fifth Third Bancorp, one of the largest U.S.-based financial institutions. With assets of more than $200 billion, Fifth Third is recognized for its corporate citizenship, financial performance, and innovation. Fifth Third’s four main businesses are Commercial Banking, Branch Banking, Consumer Lending and Wealth & Asset Management. It has approximately 20,000 employees, banking centers across 11 states,
and commercial and consumer lending presence across the U.S. Spence became Fifth Third’s CEO in July 2022 and was concurrently appointed to the Company’s Board of Directors. Prior to that he was named President in October 2020. He joined the Bank in 2015. Spence has spearheaded the Bank’s digital transformation efforts, including the acquisitions of Provide and Dividend Finance, and the development of the award-winning Fifth Third Momentum Banking product. He also was integral in developing the bank’s North Star strategy to improve performance through business cycles. In 2018 he was named American Banker’s Digital Banker of the Year.

Spence previously worked as a partner at the consulting firm Oliver Wyman and at two growth-stage technology businesses. He earned a bachelor’s degree with high honors from Colgate University.

 

12. René Jones
Chairman and CEO, M&T Bank

René F. Jones is Chairman and CEO of M&T Bank, a diversified, community-focused banking franchise with $200 billion in assets and a network of more than 1,000 branches across the eastern U.S. Jones previously served as Chief Financial Officer from 2005 to 2016, responsible for managing the financial actions of the company. In 2005, he was named to M&T’s Management Group, a group of senior executives responsible for the company’s strategic direction.

Born and raised in Ayer, Mass., Jones received a B.S. in Management Science from Boston College. He began his career in accounting at the Boston-based office of Ernst & Young, and later at a private equity firm, and went on to receive an MBA from the University of Rochester. In 1992, he joined M&T as part of the Executive Associates Program.

Jones participates in several organizations to help advance the industry, including the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where he serves as a director, and the Bank Policy Institute, where he serves as a board member. He is also active in the business community, serving on the boards of ACV Auctions, Boston College, Jacobs Institute and the Massachusetts Historical Society, as well as on the advisory council of the University at Buffalo.

As one of only a few Black CEOs in the Fortune 500, Jones is passionate about equity of opportunity, both in and outside the company. He serves as a steward of the Council for Inclusive Capitalism and on the capital advisory committee of Aux21, a seed-stage firm investing in the future of global commerce with a focus on companies led by immigrant founders.

 

13. Christopher Gorman
Chairman, CEO and President, KeyCorp

Christopher Gorman is Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President of KeyCorp where he brings more than 30 years of financial services experience to his role. Chris and his team are responsible for $189.8 billion in assets, more than 17,000 employees and 3.5 million clients. He is focused on, and dedicated to, delivering shareholder value; keeping the client experience central to all priorities; lifting and revitalizing communities; and maintaining a diverse, experienced, and engaged board of directors and team.

Chris is a board member of the Business Roundtable and the Ohio Business Roundtable, and also sits on the Executive Committee. He is a member of the Supervisory Board for The Clearing House, and is an active member of both the Bank Policy Institute (BPI) and its technology policy division, the BITS Committee.

Chris is also active in the Cleveland community, serving as a Trustee of the Cleveland Museum of Art and on the board of the University Hospitals Health System, where he also is the Chair of the Audit & Compliance Committee. He is on the Executive Committee of the Greater Cleveland Partnership, and co-chair of their Equity & Inclusion committee, and serves on the Board of Visitors for the Farmer School of Business at Miami University. He received a bachelor's degree in finance from Miami University.

 

14. Stephen Steinour
Chairman, President, and CEO, Huntington Bank

Stephen D. Steinour is Chairman, President, and CEO of Columbus, Ohio-based Huntington Bancshares Incorporated, a $175 billion regional bank-holding company delivering a full suite of commercial and retail banking, investment management, and insurance services through Huntington National Bank and its affiliates.

Steinour joined Huntington in 2009 from CrossHarbor Capital Partners where he served as Managing Partner. Previously, he served as President and CEO of commercial bank holding company Citizens Financial Group, Division Executive for Fleet Financial Group, and Executive Vice President at Bank of New England. Steinour began his career as an analyst for the U.S. Treasury Department and subsequently worked for the FDIC.

Steinour is a member of the Board of Directors of L Brands, Inc. where he serves on its Executive Committee and is Chair of its Audit Committee, Battelle Memorial Institute where he serves on its Audit Committee, and the National Veterans Memorial and Museum where he is Chair of its Finance & Audit Committee. Steinour is a Trustee of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He is a member of The Columbus Partnership and serves on its Governing Board and Executive Committee and is Vice Chair of the Ohio Business Roundtable. He is a member of the Bank Policy Institute and The Clearing House. Steinour previously served on the Boards of Exelon Corporation and the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. He is a former Vice Chair of the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation and a former Trustee of Liberty Property Trust, the Eisenhower Fellowships, and the National Constitution Center. He is past Chairman of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.

Steinour completed the Executive Program in Leadership at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and he holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Gettysburg College. He and his wife and children reside in Columbus.

 

15. Darryl White
Chief Executive Officer, BMO Financial Group

Darryl White is the Chief Executive Officer of BMO Financial Group. He chairs the bank’s Executive Committee and serves as a director of BMO Financial Group, as well as its U.S. subsidiary, BMO Financial Corp. White joined BMO’s investment and corporate banking business in Toronto in 1994 and returned to his hometown in 2006 as Head of Montreal Investment & Corporate Banking for BMO Capital Markets. In 2014, he was named CEO and Group Head, BMO Capital Markets, and in 2016 was appointed BMO’s Chief Operating Officer.

White is a member of the Ottawa-based Business Council of Canada, the Washington, D.C-based The Business Council, the Mayor of Beijing’s International Business Leaders Advisory Council, and The Bank Policy Institute, a nonpartisan public policy, research and advocacy group, representing leading banks in the U.S.

Darryl holds an undergraduate degree from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario and has completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School. He is a past recipient of Canada’s Top 40 under 40 Award.

 

16. Michael Roberts
President and CEO, HSBC Bank USA

Michael Roberts is President, CEO, and Executive Director of HSBC North America Holdings Inc., and also serves as Chairman of HSBC Bank USA, N.A., and HSBC USA Inc. He is a Group Managing Director of HSBC Holdings plc, and a member of the Group Executive Committee. His appointment to these roles took effect in October 2019.

Roberts was appointed as CEO, Americas, with oversight responsibility for Canada and Latin America, with effect from April 2021. He was also appointed as Chairman of HSBC Latin America Holdings (U.K.) Limited with effect from January 2023.

He oversees HSBC Holdings plc’s Americas businesses which serve domestic and international customers across Wealth and Personal Banking, Commercial Banking, and Global Banking & Markets.

Previously Roberts was at Citigroup, most recently as Global Head of Corporate Banking and Capital Management and Chief Lending Officer. In these roles, he managed 1,500 bankers across 100 countries, and was responsible for lending to institutional, private banking, and retail customers globally. During his 33-year career at Citi, he held various senior leadership roles in the U.S. and abroad, including Head of Global Financial Institutions, Head of Global Automotive and Industrials, CEO of Citibank Canada, and positions in France, Belgium and Türkiye.

Roberts holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Texas, Austin, and a master’s degree in banking and finance from the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs.

 

17. Stephen Squeri
Chairman and CEO, American Express

Stephen J. Squeri is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Express Company, a leader in global payments and one of the world’s most respected companies. Since being named to this role in February of 2018, Squeri has built a culture focused on backing customers, colleagues, and communities, and has evolved the company’s operating model through an enterprise-wide strategy focused on delivering sustainable, long-term growth.

Under his leadership, American Express has launched innovative payment, financial management, and lifestyle offerings for consumers and businesses, expanded strategic partnerships, enhanced digital capabilities, reshaped its strategy to drive growth in international markets, and became the first foreign payments network to receive a clearing license in mainland China.

A native of Queens, NY, Squeri is deeply committed to giving back to the community and advancing opportunities for education and economic development. He serves on the boards of both his alma maters, Manhattan College and Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School. In addition, he currently sits on the Board of Trustees of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and The Valerie Fund.

 

18. Michael O'Grady
Chairman and CEO, Northern Trust

Michael O'Grady is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Northern Trust, a leading provider of wealth management, asset servicing, asset management, and banking to corporations, institutions, affluent families, and individuals.

O’Grady joined Northern Trust in 2011 from Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where he served as a managing director in the firm's Investment Banking Group. He joined Merrill Lynch in 1992. Prior to Merrill Lynch, Mike worked for Price Waterhouse.

O’Grady earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA. from Harvard Graduate School of Business.

He is a member of the boards of the Field Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Catholic Extension, and the Northwestern Medical Group Board of Directors. He also serves on the Finance Council of the Archdiocese of Chicago, the Board of Advisors of Catholic Charities, and the Civic Committee Commercial Club of Chicago.

 

19. John Turner Jr.
President and CEO, Regions Bank

John Turner is President and CEO of Regions Financial Corporation. He leads the company’s executive leadership team. Regions is a regional bank that operates throughout the South, Midwest, and Texas, and is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama.

Effective July 2, 2018, Turner became the CEO and was appointed to Regions’ board of directors. He was named President in December 2017. Previously, Turner served as Head of the Corporate Bank, a role he took on in 2014. He joined Regions in 2011 as President of the South Region, leading banking operations in Alabama, Mississippi, South Louisiana, and the Florida Panhandle.

Before joining Regions, Turner was named president of Whitney National Bank and Whitney Holding Corporation in 2008, and was elected to the bank and holding company boards of directors. Before that he was responsible for all geographic line banking functions across the bank, and served as the company’s Eastern Region President. Turner joined Whitney in 1994 as its Alabama regional president after nine years at AmSouth Bank, where he held senior consumer, commercial, and business positions.

Turner holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Georgia. He serves on the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, United Way of Central Alabama, Business Council of Alabama, Birmingham Business Alliance, A Plus Education Foundation and Infirmary Health System boards. Turner previously served on Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama and is a former chairman of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, the Mobile Area Education Foundation, and the United Way of Southwest Alabama. He is a graduate of Leadership Alabama and a former board member of Leadership Mobile.

 

20. Roger Hochschild
President and CEO, Discover Bank

Roger C. Hochschild is CEO and President of Discover, and a member of the Board of Directors. He is responsible for all company operations, including Discover’s direct banking services: credit cards, loans and deposit products; and the Discover Global Network, comprised of the Discover Network (with millions of merchant and cash access locations), PULSE (a leading ATM/debit network), and Diners Club International (a global payments network with acceptance in more than 200 countries and territories).

Hochschild joined Discover in 1998. Prior to assuming responsibilities as President and Chief Operating Officer in 2004, he was Chief Administrative and Strategic Officer of Morgan Stanley, Discover’s then parent company, for three years. Before coming to Discover, Hochschild worked for MBNA America and the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton.

Hochschild holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Georgetown University and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He serves on the board of directors for Metropolitan Family Services and Chicago Public Media, and is on the Advisory Board of the Tuck School of Business. He is also a member of the board of directors for Principal Financial Group and The Executives’ Club of Chicago.

 

21. Frank Holding Jr.
Chairman and CEO, First Citizens Bank

Frank B. Holding, Jr. is Chairman and CEO of First Citizens Bank and parent company First Citizens BancShares, Inc., headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina. At the helm of the third-generation financial institution with over $49 billion in assets, Holding leads one of the largest family-controlled banks in the nation. He previously served as President of First Citizens, after having held senior management positions with the bank in Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington, Swansboro, and Fayetteville.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he holds an MBA. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and is engaged in civic affairs across his home state of North Carolina. Holding currently serves on the BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina Board of Trustees and is a former Chairman of the Board. He is also a member of the Mount Olive Pickle Company, Inc. Board of Directors, as well as a past chairman of the North Carolina Chamber. With deep familial ties to Wake Forest, he has served the University as a trustee since 2012.

 

22. Timothy Wennes
President and CEO, Santander Bank

Tim Wennes is the Santander U.S. Chief Executive Officer and Country Head, as well as President and Chief Executive Officer of Santander Bank. Tim is responsible for managing all Santander U.S. businesses, as well as establishing and executing long-range growth strategies in the United States.

Santander U.S. is comprised of Santander Bank, with top 20 multifamily and commercial real estate lending businesses and growing consumer and commercial banking activities in the Northeast; Santander Consumer – a top 10 auto lender; strong corporate and investment banking division; and a thriving wealth management business. With a focus on digital innovation and investments that drive a best-in-class customer experience, Wennes and his leadership team are building on Santander’s global strength and scale to accelerate growth and brand recognition in the U.S.

Wennes joined Santander in September 2019. He has more than 30 years of experience in banking and finance, and is a member of the Santander Holdings USA, Inc. and SBNA Boards of Directors and Executive Committees. He was appointed to the Santander Consumer USA Holdings Inc., the Banco Santander International and the Santander Capital Holdings LLC Boards of Directors in August 2022. He also serves on the governing board for the nonprofit Operation HOPE, Inc., which focuses on financial dignity and inclusion, and helping people secure a better future through financial education.

Wennes earned an undergraduate degree in business administration from the University of Southern California and an MBA in International Business from California State University Fullerton.

 

23. Kelly Coffey
Chief Executive Officer, City National Bank

Kelly Coffey is the Chief Executive Officer of City National Bank, a subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Canada.

Coffey is only City National’s fourth CEO since the company was founded in January 1954. Prior to joining City National in 2019, she served as the Chief Executive Officer of J.P. Morgan’s U.S. Private Bank. She also spent more than 20 years at the firm’s investment bank, where she held a variety of leadership positions, including the Head of Diversified Industrials Investment Banking, Head of Equity, FX & Interest Rate Derivatives Marketing, and Head of Corporate Finance Advisory in North America. Coffey began her career in mergers and acquisitions and spent six years working in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She also chaired J.P. Morgan’s Reputation Risk Committee in North America and led the investment bank’s Women’s Network.

Coffey serves on the board of directors of Snap Inc. Snap is a camera company focused on improving the way people live and communicate. It was named the most innovative company in the country by Fast Company in March 2020. She is also a member of the Leadership Council of U.S.VETS, the nation’s largest veteran services nonprofit, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Marymount School of New York. In 2021, Coffey was awarded U.S.VETS’ highest honor, the Judge Harry Pregerson Public Service Award, for showing the utmost dedication to the nation’s veterans. Coffey also sits on the boards of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation and the Central Park Conservancy and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Economic Club of New York.

Coffey earned her bachelor’s degree in international affairs and French from Lafayette College, and she holds a master of science in foreign service with a concentration in international business from Georgetown University.

 

24. A. Scott Anderson
President and Chief Executive Officer, Zions First National Bank

A. Scott Anderson is President and Chief Executive Officer of Zions First National Bank. Founded in 1873, Zions Bank is Utah's oldest financial institution and is the only local bank with a statewide distribution of local branches. Zions Bank operates locations in communities throughout Utah and Idaho. In addition to a wide range of traditional banking services, Zions offers a comprehensive array of investment, mortgage, and insurance services and has a network of loan origination offices for small businesses nationwide.

A native of Salt Lake City, Anderson joined Zions Bank in December of 1990, and was Executive Vice President of Retail Banking from 1991 until 1998. In that position, he was responsible for the growth and operation of the bank’s branch network throughout Utah and Idaho, as well as overseeing other consumer and small business banking activities. Before Zions, he worked various roles at Bank of America, beginning in 1974, including merchant banking officer, investment officer, high-tech lending specialist, and others in San Francisco’s main office, as well as in Bank of America’s Asia division in Tokyo. Hereceived a bachelor's degree in philosophy and economics from Columbia University in New York. He also received a master's degree in economics and international studies from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Active in community affairs, Anderson currently serves on a number of business and nonprofit boards.

 

25. Curtis Farmer
Chairman, President, and CEO, Comerica Bank

Curtis Farmer is Chairman, President, and CEO of Comerica Incorporated and Comerica Bank. He also serves as a director of both organizations and leads Comerica’s Management Executive Committee.

Farmer joined Comerica as Executive Vice President of Wealth Management in 2008. He was named Vice Chairman of Comerica's Retail Bank and Wealth Management divisions in 2011, and President of Comerica Incorporated and Comerica Bank in 2015. Farmer was appointed CEO in April 2019 and assumed the role of Chairman on January 1, 2020.

Farmer joined Comerica from Wachovia Corporation of Charlotte, North Carolina, where he served as Executive Vice President of Wealth Management. During his 23 years with Wachovia, he held a variety of positions of increasing scope and responsibility.

Farmer holds a bachelor's degree from Wake Forest University, where he also earned his master’s degree in business administration.

Farmer's board affiliations are Circle 10 Council of the Boys Scouts of America, SMU Tate Lecture Series, SMU Cox School of Business Executive Board, The Clearing House, Crystal Charity Ball Advisory Board, Methodist Health System Foundation and Wake Forest University Board. In addition, he is a member of the Bank Policy Institute and Dallas Citizens Council.
