Alumni Spotlight is pleased to announce The Top 100 MIT Alumni in Technology of 2021.  Long known for being one of the world’s top universities in science and technology, unsurprisingly MIT produces an astounding number of entrepreneurs and business leaders.  Established in 1861, the university was founded during a time of increasing industrialization in the United States and centered around laboratory instructions in applied science and engineering.  As of June 2021, there have been over 95 Nobel laureates, 26 Turing Award winners and 8 Field Medalists to have come from MIT either as alumni, faculty members or researchers.  Over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled at the university each year.

The following 100 alumni were nominated and selected for their professional accomplishments in and contributions to the field of technology.  They work in subfields of expertise perhaps most relevant to today’s economy and innovation era.  Many have founded and most all lead notable companies.  These companies develop products and solutions in the areas of robotics, cybersecurity, genomics, blockchain, education technology, financial technology, autonomous driving, and many other deeply technical areas.  Please join us in celebrating The Top 100 MIT Alumni in Technology of 2021.

1. Dharmesh Shah
HubSpot

Dharmesh Shah is the Founder and Chief Technology Officer at HubSpot. He first joined the company in 2006 as founder and CTO. HubSpot develops cloud-based inbound marketing software that allows businesses to transform the way that they market online.

Previously, Shah was a founder and CEO of Pyramid Digital Solutions and before that a software developer at SunGard Employee Benefit Systems. Shah earned a degree in management of technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an undergraduate degree in computer science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

 

2. Frederic Kerrest
Okta, Inc.

Frederic Kerrest is the Executive Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Okta, Inc.. Okta is a management platform that secures critical resources from cloud to ground for workforce and customers.

Frederic first got his start in 2000 as a director, enterprise technology division at Meridian Global Solutions. From there, he went on to sales & business development at Salesforce, his most recent position prior to joining Okta. Frederic graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Sloan School of Management with a Master of Business Administration degree and from Stanford University with an undergraduate degree in computer science.

 

3. Drew Houston
Dropbox

Drew Houston is the Founder & CEO of Dropbox. Dropbox is the world’s first smart workspace that helps people and teams focus on the work that matters. It is a a file hosting service that offers cloud storage, file synchronization, personal cloud, and client software. Houston has over 14 years of experience in the software industry. He began his career in 2007.

Before joining Dropbox, Houston was a founder at Accolade and before that a software engineer at Bit9, Inc. Houston graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an undergraduate degree in computer science.

 

4. Josh Breinlinger
Rev.com

Josh Breinlinger began his professional career over 17 years ago. Today, he is the Board Member and Co-founder of Rev.com. Rev combines human and artificial intelligence to deliver the largest and most popular voice-to-text service in the world.

Breinlinger first got his start in 2004 as a founding team at oDesk Corporation. From there, he went on to AdRoll.com, before eventually rising to general partner at Jackson Square Ventures, his most recent position prior to joining Rev.com

Breinlinger graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering.

 

5. Bob Smith
Blue Origin

Bob Smith is the Chief Executive Officer of Blue Origin. He first joined the company in 2017 as CEO. Blue Origin is an aerospace company that focuses on lowering the cost of spaceflight and helping to explore the solar system.

Previously, Smith was a president of mechanical systems & components at Honeywell Aerospace and before that he was an executive director at the United Space Alliance. Earlier in his career he worked with the Aerospace Corporation as a system director. Smith earned a PhD in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master's degree in business from the MIT Sloan School of Management, and an undergraduate degree in applied math/engineering from Brown University.

 

6. Kyle Vogt
Cruise

Kyle Vogt is the Co-Founder, President, and CTO of Cruise. Cruise is building the world’s most advanced self-driving vehicles to safely connect people with the places, things, and experiences they care about. Vogt has over 11 years of experience in the automotive industry. He began his career in 2011.

Before joiningCruise, Vogt was a co-founder at Twitch and before that he was a co-founder at Justin.tv, Inc. where he artchitechted and built the platform. Earlier in his career he worked with Socialcam as a co-founder.Vogt graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 

7. John Krafcik
Waymo

John Krafcik is the Chief Executive Officer of Waymo. He first joined the company in 2015 as CEO. Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around.

Previously, Krafcik was a president at TrueCar, Inc. and before that a president and CEO at Hyundai Motor America. Earlier in his career he worked with NUMMI as a quality & manufacturing engineer. Krafcik earned a Master's degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Sloan School of Management and an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University.

 

8. Hamid Moghadam
Prologis

Hamid Moghadam began his professional career over 38 years ago. Today, he is the Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Prologis. Prologis Ventures is an owner, operator, and developer of industrial real estate. The company leases modern distribution facilities to more than 5,200 customers, including manufacturers, retailers, transportation companies, third-party logistics providers, and other enterprises with large-scale distribution needs.

Moghadam first got his start in 1983 as a director at Plum Creek Timber Company. Moghadam graduated from Stanford University Graduate School of Business with a Master of Business Administration degree and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an undergraduate degree in engineering.

 

9. Steve Fredette
Toast

Steve Fredette is the Co-founder and President of Toast, Inc. Toast is an all-in-one point-of-sale and restaurant management platform for businesses in the food service and hospitality space. As a cloud-based system built specifically for restaurants, Toast offers advanced functionality including tableside ordering, quick menu modifications, real-time enterprise reporting, online ordering, and labor management on an easy-to-use interface. The company powers successful restaurants by combining point of sale, front of house, back of house, and guest-facing technology. Fredette has over 12 years of experience in the software industry. He began his career in 2009.

Before joining Toast, Fredette was a manager of development at Endeca and before that, he was a co-founder at Klick Mobile. Fredette graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an undergraduate degree in chemistry.

 

10. Aman Narang
Toast

Aman Narang is the Co-Founder and President of Toast, Inc. He first joined the company in 2013. Max Kolysh is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Dover. He first joined the company in 2019. Dover is building the first end-to-end recruiting automation platform for the world's top companies. Their advanced matching software identifies the perfect candidates across all recruiting channels and candidate sources, and drives the hiring process to create a seamless, white-glove experience for both companies and candidates.

Previously, Kolysh was a founder and COO at Zinc and before that, he was a software engineer at Groupon. Earlier in his career, he worked with Oliver Wyman as a financial services consultant. Kolysh earned an undergraduate degree in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 

12. Sanjit Biswas
Samsara

Sanjit Biswas began his professional career over 15 years ago. Today, he is the Chief Executive Officer of Samsara. Samsara is the pioneer of the Connected Operations Cloud, which allows businesses that depend on physical operations to harness IoT (Internet of Things) data to develop actionable business insights and improve their operations.

Biswas first got his start in 2006 as a CEO at Meraki, Inc.. From there, he went on to VP/GM cloud networking group at Cisco Systems, his most recent position prior to joining Samsara. Biswas graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Master of Science degree in computer science and from Stanford University with an undergraduate degree in computer science and electrical engineering.

 

13. Sterling Anderson
Aurora

Sterling Anderson began his professional career over years ago. Today, he is the Co-Founder & Chief Product Officer of Aurora. Aurora is delivering the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly, and broadly.

Anderson first got his start in 2021 as a co-founder at Gimlet Systems. From there, he went on to McKinsey & Company, before eventually rising to director of autopilot programs at Tesla, his most recent position prior to joining Aurora. Anderson graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a PhD and Master of Science degree in robotics.

 

14. Elliot Cohen
PillPack

Elliot Cohen is the Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer of PillPack. PillPack is a full-service pharmacy that sorts medication by dose and offers door-to-door delivery. Cohen has over 15 years of experience in the healthcare industry. He began his career in 2006.

Before joining PillPack, Cohen was a co-founder and co-director at Hacking Medicine at MIT and before that he was a co-founder at Corengi, Inc. Earlier in his career, he worked with Microsoft Office as a program manager. Cohen graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Master of Business Administration degree and from the University of California, Berkeley with an undergraduate degree in computer science and cognitive science.

 

15. Pasquale Romano
ChargePoint

Pasquale Romano is the President and Chief Executive Officer of ChargePoint. ChargePoint brings electric vehicle (EV) charging to more people and places than ever before as the world’s leading EV charging network. These stations are available as public charging stations, consumer subscription plans, and utility grid management technology for electric utility companies to smooth electric demands on the grid. Romano has over 32 years of experience in the automotive industry. He began his career in 1989.

Before joining ChargePoint, Romano was a president and CEO (founder) at 2Wire and before that a director of engineering and marketing at Polycom. Earlier in his career, he worked with Fluent as a chief architect (founder). Romano graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Master of Science degree in media lab and from Harvard University with an undergraduate degree in computer science.

 

16. Bill Magnuson
Braze

Bill Magnuson is the Co-founder & Chief Executive Officer of Braze. He first joined the company in 2011. Braze is a customer engagement platform that delivers messaging experiences across push, email, apps, and more. Its platform allows for real-time and continuous data streaming, replacing decades-old databases that aren’t built for today’s on-demand, always-connected customer. With data, technology, and teams working together in unison, the Braze platform makes marketing more authentic, brands more human, and customers more satisfied with every experience.

Previously, Magnuson was a software engineer at Bridgewater Associates. Magnuson earned a Master's degree in EECS and an undergraduate degree in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 

17. Karl Sun
Lucid

Karl Sun is the CEO and Co-founder of Lucid. Lucid is a visual collaboration suite that helps teams see and build the future from idea to reality. Sun has over 24 years in the computer software industry. He began his career in 1997.

Before joining Lucid, Sun was a head of business development, China at Google and attorney at Perkins Coie. Earlier in his career, he worked with Venture Law Group as an attorney. Sun graduated from Harvard Law School with a Juris Doctor in law and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Master of Science in technology & policy program and an undergraduate degree in EECS.

 

18. Carlos Cashman
Thrasio

Carlos Cashman began his professional career over 26 years ago. Today, he is the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Thrasio. Thrasio is a digital consumer goods company that acquires private label Amazon FBA businesses and direct-to-consumer e-commerce brands. It is backed by investor groups representing private equity firms.

Cashman first got his start in 1995 as a CTO at Frankfurt Balkind. From there, he went on to Opus360, before eventually rising to director at SecretBuilders, his most recent position prior to joining Thrasio. Cashman graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an undergraduate degree in information technology.

 

19. Sal Khan
Khan Academy

Sal Khan began his professional career over 18 years ago. Today, he is the Founder of Khan Academy. Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization that provides a free world class education for anyone, anywhere.

Khan first got his start in 2003 as a senior analyst at Wohl Capital Management. From there, he went on to Connective Capital Management as a senior analyst, his most recent position prior to joining Khan Academy. Khan graduated from Harvard Business School with a Master of Business Administration and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Master of Engineering degree in computer science and electrical engineering and an undergraduate degree in computer science and mathematics.

 

20. Godard Abel
G2

Godard Abel is the Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer of G2. He first joined the company in year 2012. G2.com (formerly G2 Crowd) is making B2B tech buying easy by connecting buyers to vendors based on authentic customer reviews and real-time ratings of business software and services.

Previously, Abel was a SVP & GM at Salesforce and before that a CEO at SteelBrick. Earlier in his career he worked with McKinsey & Company as a business analyst & associate. Abel earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Stanford University Graduate School of Business and a Master of Science and undergraduate degree in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 

21. Hans Robertson
Verkada

Hans Robertson began his professional career over 22 years ago. Today, he is the Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of Verkada. Verkada builds modern security solutions that help enterprises run safer, smarter buildings.

Robertson first got his start in 1999 as a business analyst at McKinsey. From there, he went on to VMware, before eventually rising to COO, VP product and co-founder at Cisco Meraki, his most recent position prior to joining Verkada. Robertson graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Master of Engineering degree and an undergraduate degree in computer science.

 

22. Peter Reinhardt
Segment

Peter Reinhardt is the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Segment. Segment provides customer data infrastructure that helps businesses put their customers first. The platform democratizes access to reliable data for all teams and offers a complete toolkit to standardize data collection, unify user records, and route customer data into any system. Reinhardt has over 10 years of experience in the software industry. He began his career in 2011.

Before joining Segment, Reinhardt was a research assistant at Naval Postgraduate School and before that he was a co-founder at Iomys Labs, LLC. Reinhardt graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering.

 

23. Natan Linder
Tulip

Natan Linder began his professional career over 25 years ago. Today, he is the Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Tulip. Tulip, the leader in frontline operations, is empowering the world’s leading companies to improve the productivity of their teams, the quality of their output, and the efficiency of their operations.

Linder first got his start in 1996 as an intelligence NCO, system engineer in the Israeli Air Force. From there, he went on to Ness Technologies, before eventually rising to lead UI designer at Rethink Robotics, his most recent position prior to joining Tulip. Linder graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a PhD and an undergraduate degree in media arts and sciences.

 

24. Adolfo Babatz

Adolfo Babatz began his professional career over 21 years ago. Today, he is the Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Clip. Clip is the leading payments company in Mexico, enabling hundreds of thousands of SMBs to accept all forms of payments.

Babatz first got his start in 2000 as a business consulting division analyst at Arthur Andersen. From there, he went on to Grupo Kuo, before eventually rising to product marketing & engagement manager, Latin-America at Paypal, his most recent position prior to joining Clip. Babatz graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Master of Business Administration degree and from Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México with an undergraduate degree in business.

 

25. Jason Kelly
Ginkgo Bioworks

Jason Kelly began his professional career over 16 years ago. Today, he is the Founder of Ginkgo Bioworks. Ginkgo Bioworks is a developer of biological engineering products and custom microbes across multiple markets. The company’s cell programming platform is enabling the growth of biotechnology across diverse markets, from food to fragrance to pharmaceuticals. They are also actively supporting a number of COVID-19 response efforts, including community testing, epidemiological tracing, vaccine development and therapeutics discovery.

Kelly first got his start in 2005 as a founder at OpenWetWare. Kelly graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a PhD in biological engineering and an undergraduate degree in biology & chemical engineering.

 

26. David Arana
Konfio

David Arana is the Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Konfio. Konfío is an online lending platform for small businesses in Mexico that uses transactional data for rapid credit assessment, allowing owners to focus on growing their business. Arana has over 14 years of experience in the financial services industry. He began his career in 2007.

Before joining Konfío, Arana was a vice president at Deutsche Bank focusing on emerging markets structured products. There, he created tailor-made solutions for clients throughout Latin America using cross-product derivatives. Arana graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an undergraduate degree in mathematics.

 

27. Natalya Bailey
Accion Systems Inc.

Natalya Bailey is the Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder of Accion Systems Inc. Accion reinvented propulsion for New Space and created a more efficient ion thruster: the Tiled Ionic Liquid Electrospray (TILE) engine. Bailey has over 11 years of experience in the defense and space industry. She began her career in 2010.

Before joining Accion Systems Inc., Bailey was a software developer at Hope Orthopedics of Oregon and before that she was a co-founder at Asteria Propulsion. Bailey graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a PhD in aeroastro, from Duke University with a Master of Science in mechanical engineering, and from San Diego State University-California State University with an undergraduate degree in aerospace, aeronautical and astronautical engineering.

 

28. Spenser Skates
Amplitude Analytics

Spenser Skates began his professional career over 11 years ago. Today, he is the Co-founder & Chief Executive Officer of Amplitude Analytics. Amplitude is a product intelligence platform that provides digital production tools that help teams run and grow their businesses.

Skates first got his start in 2010 as an algorithmic trader and researcher at DRW Trading Group. From there, he went on to Sonalight as a co-founder, his most recent position prior to joining Amplitude Analytics. Skates graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an undergraduate degree in bioengineering.

 

29. Elad Gil
Color Genomics

Elad Gil is the Co-Founder of Color Genomics. He first joined the company in 2008and transitioned to board member in early 2016. Color is a population health technology company that enables the delivery of advanced healthcare through clinical genetics.

Previously, Gil was a vice president at Twitter and before that a CEO and co-founder at Mixer Labs. Earlier in his career he worked with Google as a product manager. Gil earned a PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an undergraduate degree in mathematics and molecular biology from UC San Diego.

 

30. Othman Laraki
Color Genomics

Othman Laraki is the Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Color Genomics. Color Genomics is a population health technology company that enables the delivery of advanced healthcare through clinical genetics. Laraki has over 12 years of experience in the healthcare industry. He began his career in 2009.

Before joining Color Genomics, Laraki was a VP of product management at Twitter and before that a co-founder at Mixer Labs. Earlier in his career he worked with Epitrope Corp as a founder. Laraki graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Master of Business Administration degree in financial engineering and from Stanford University with an undergraduate degree in computer science.

 

31. Sajith Wickramasekara
Benchling

Sajith Wickramasekara is the Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Benchling. Benchling is a cloud-based software platform for biology researchers and research and development organizations to manage massively complex experimental datasets and optimize R&D processes. Wickramasekara has over 14 years of experience in the software industry. He began his career in 2007.

Before joining Benchling, Wickramasekara was a research assistant at Liquidia Technologies and before that a research assistant at Duke University Medical Center. Wickramasekara graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering and computer science.

 

32. Ashu Singhal
Benchling

Ashu Singhal is the Co-Founder and President of Benchling. He first joined the company in 2014. Benchling is a cloud-based software platform for biology researchers and research and development organizations. The company is powering breakthrough research on biotherapeutics, biofuels, and biomaterials at leading life science companies and the world's most renowned academic labs.

Previously, Singhal was a staff software engineer at Twitter, and before that he was a co-founder at Hotspots.io. Singhal earned an undergraduate degree in computer science and mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 

33. Marc Raibert
Boston Dynamics

Marc Raibert is the Chairman & Founder of Boston Dynamics. He first joined the company in 1992 as CEO. Boston Dynamics is a spin-off of MIT and builds advanced mobile manipulation robots with remarkable mobility, dexterity perception and agility.

Previously, Raibert was a professor in electrical engineering and computer science at MIT and before that an associate professor in the computer science department and the robotics institute at Carnegie Mellon University. Raibert earned a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University.

 

34. Eric Berry
TripleLift

Eric Berry began his professional career over 17 years ago. Today, he is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of TripleLift. TripleLift is a technology company rooted at the intersection of creativity and media.

Berry first got his start in 2004 as a business analyst at Harvard Business School. From there, he went on to AmeriCorps VISTA, before eventually rising to product architecture and client services at AppNexus, his most recent position prior to joining TripleLift. Berry graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Master of Engineering degree in electrical engineering and computer science and an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering and computer science, biomedical engineering.

 

35. Inaki Berenguer
CoverWallet

Inaki Berenguer began his professional career over years ago. Today, he is the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of CoverWallet. CoverWallet is an online platform that offers insurance management services to its clients.

Berenguer first got his start in 2008 as a corporate strategy manager at the Microsoft Corporation. From there, he went on to Pixable, before eventually rising to CEO and co-founder at Klink Inc., his most recent position prior to joining CoverWallet.

Berenguer graduated from the University of Cambridge with a PhD and Master's degree in engineering and from the MIT Sloan School of Management with a Master of Business Administration degree.

 

36. Gregory Mark
Markforged

Gregory Mark is the Chairman of Markforged. He first joined the company in 2013 as founder and CEO. Markforged is a manufacturing company that invented a new 3D printing process to build parts with the strength of Continuous Carbon Fiber.

Previously, Mark was a CEO at Genasun and before that a founder and CEO at Aeromotions. Earlier in his career, he worked with Outback Bicycles as a fabricator. Mark earned a Master of Science degree and an undergraduate degree in aeronautics and astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 

37. Andrew Sutherland
Quizle

Andrew Sutherland is the Founder of Quizlet. Quizlet is a learning platform that uses activities and games to help students practice and master what they’re learning.

Sutherland founded Quizlet in 2005 for a high school French class. It quickly spread to his class, then his whole school, and then the world. Quizlet is now among the top 70 websites in the entire U.S., and is often among the top 3 free apps in the app store for Education. Sutherland earned an undergraduate degree in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 

38. Ric Fulop
Desktop Metal

Ric Fulop began his professional career over 28 years ago. Today, he is the Co-Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Desktop Metal. Desktop Metal is a provider of metal and carbon fiber 3D printing accessible to all engineers, designers, and manufacturers.

Fulop first got his start in 1993 as a co-founder at DenebaCAD. From there, he went on to Into Networks, before eventually rising to founder at A123 Systems, his most recent position prior to joining Desktop Metal. Fulop graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Sloan School of Management with a Master of Business Administration.

 

39. Noubar Afeyan
Flagship Pioneering

Noubar Afeyan is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Flagship Pioneering. Flagship Pioneering conceives, creates, resources, and develops first-in-category life sciences companies to transform human health and sustainability. He began his career in 1995.

Before joining Flagship Pioneering, Afeyan was a co-founder and board member at Seres Therapeutics and before that he was a board member and co-founder at Cobalt Biomedicine, Inc.. Earlier in his career he worked with Chemgenics Pharmaceuticals as a chairman and co-founder. Afeyan graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a PhD in biochemical engineering and from McGill University with an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering.

 

40. Beerud Sheth
Gupshup

Beerud Sheth is the Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Gupshup. Gupshup is a smart messaging platform that enables developers to build messaging services and bots that work across all channels. Sheth has over 27 years in the information technology & services industry.

Before joining Gupshup, Sheth was a founder & VP at Upwork and before that a AVP at Merrill Lynch. Earlier in his career he worked with Citibank Securities Corp as an AVP. Sheth graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Master of Science in computer science and from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay with an undergraduate degree in computer science.

 

41. Christopher Yang
